Gas Flaring on the Brainnwave Platform

Just how bad is Gas Flaring?

Approximately 142 billion cubic meters of gas was burned as part of gas flaring in 2020, resulting in roughly 400 million tons of CO2 -equivalent emissions annually. If that seems like a lot, it is the equivalent of 78,917,780 passenger cars driven in one year, or $20 billion USD worth of gas.

As part of the drilling and refining process in the oil and gas sector, volatile or unused Associated Petroleum Gas (APG) is burned off as “flaring”. It is seen as a relatively safe, though wasteful and polluting method of disposing of APG.

In addition to the environmental cost of CO2, inefficient flares or cold venting from flaring locations can also contribute to methane quantities in the atmosphere.

Although the volume of methane released is generally a lot smaller than the volume of gas flared, it is 25 times more harmful for the environment than CO2.

Building on the Aggreko partnership

Aggreko develops bespoke energy solutions by supplying their global customer base with temporary power generation and temperature control equipment.

Brainnwave was tasked to help transform Aggreko’s sales organization as part of its strategy to identify and pursue the most attractive opportunities, improve data usage and instil a culture of data-driven decision making throughout the organization.

When Aggreko developed a new power solution to transform the wasted and harmful gas flaring into energy, they called on Brainnwave to help them identify the top global opportunities that would benefit from this technology.

Brainnwave then developed a new approach that enabled Aggreko commercial teams to pinpoint gas flaring, using night-time satellite imagery to identify globally, where and how much gas was being flared and by which operators.

Using visible, infrared radiometer data and algorithms, checked and validated by the World Bank, Brainnwave were able to detect the volume of gas flared at each site – enabling Aggreko to target those customer opportunities that would benefit most from the new solution.

Unleashing the power of Brainnwave

Brainnwave developed their platform to integrate with multiple data streams, both internal and external and to visualize a single source of truth. For example, the platform sources, cleans and enriches external data from providers such as Bloomberg, Fitch, EIU, Climatescope, BP, Platts, IIR, SNL and Rystad

Geospatial data was integrated directly into the analytical process, enabling Aggreko teams to use satellite and mapping data without needing specialist skills or analytics tools to promptly identify suitable locations.

The outcome was a go-to-market strategy that helped identify ideal customers for Aggreko’s new gas-flaring power solution, faster and with improved accuracy. In turn, Aggreko’s customers are presented with a solution that can lower their emissions and impact on the environment while simultaneously maximising oil production by utilizing the gas for power generation instead.

Driving commercial success

Aggreko recently completed the largest flare gas to power project in the Middle East. The modular plant was run at capacity for 72 hours, as part of the final acceptance test, on approximately 40 MMft3d of APG from the Saqala Field, saving 840 tons of  CO2 per day and cutting flaring by a third.
